Becoming a self-published author, was it worth it?

I recently had someone slide into my DM's asking me, "what sparked this idea for Bigfoot Books?" This woman is also a stay at home parent and has a child with a disability and was inspired by the mission, which fills my heart every time someone says that to me, but I responded with a very longwinded answer that she didn't ask for. So let me clean it up here for you.

Bigfoot Books was the idea that finally came to after I self-published 3 children's books, had 2 kids, and countless conversations online with people against inclusive practices. I started getting fed up with social media and all of the drama with trolls, and I said to myself, "Why am I so focused on these faceless people on social media. I am a part of a community here-I want to help them first."
Why did I choose a nonprofit focusing on books that represented the disabled community?
Because after I self-published mine, I met SO MANY self-published authors with stories they were sharing through children's books. We would connect and talk about our process and then I would learn, we were all struggling to be a publishing company. We all are trying to sell our books, table at events, sell ourselves, and end up with barely any sales.
I know people want books but financially, families are struggling. I want to take that piece out of it. Which led me to Bigfoot Books. We partner with self-published authors with disabilities or people who work within the disabled community and help them share their stories. We pay them for their books and give them to families for free!
As we get the ball rolling, we have been hosting popups where we bring the books for kids to enjoy and read all for free and always accept donations :)
Becoming a self-published author, now hoarding hundreds of my books in my garage, closets, and office space, I feel silly. Imposter syndrome is real. But it led me to this idea that I so strongly believe in. Bigfoot Books will bring books with disability representation to the community and will continue to grow!
So was it worth it? Yes. Every leap of faith and minute spent on my books brought me here and I can't wait to see where we go next.
Read. Roam. Repeat.
